No British person has ever won the Tour de France yet. A British rider did once collect the highest total number of points, finishing in 11th place. The best overall UK results have been for Robert Millar, who finished 4th in 1984, and Bradley Wiggins, who reached the same place in 2009. In the 2012 Tour, at the time of writing this, Bradley Wiggins is in second place, so who knows? Peter Sagan from Slovakia is currently in first place.

By far the most successful country in the race has been France, with 36 wins. The most successful individual rider is the American Lance Armstrong, who has won seven times in a row. Recently there have been allegations of illegal drug use against him, but these have not been proved up to now.

The 2012 Tour de France will end on 22 July.
