The name Soho is usually associated with a district in London, but there are at least six other places with that name.

There is a town called Soho in North Korea, and another area in Pyongyang called Soho-ri. In Argentina, in Buenos Aires there is also a district called Palermo Soho. In the US the word SoHo is often used to describe a gentrifying effect on an area, called after the SoHo neighbourhood in Manhattan, which has become wealthy and fashionable as a centre for artists and shoppers. The name in this case comes from the phrase South of Huston.

In the UK, as well as London there is a Soho Hill area in Birmingham, and Soho Place in Northern Ireland.

The London district of Soho is said to take its name from a hunting cry sometimes used in battle. It was given its name in the 17th century when the land, which belonged to the king at the time, was given to the Earl of St Albans.
