His fans have been waiting for the answer to this question since 2006, but it seems there is no answer yet. On 22 June 2012, Lynch gave an interview to the Los Angleles times in which he explained that he just doesn't have any ideas at the moment that interest him enough to make a new movie.

He is actually involved in being filmed at the moment - a documentary is being made about him - and otherwise he seems to spend a lot of time painting. He is also very keen on Transcendental Meditation, which seems to take up a lot of his time, and is also involved with charitable work. He has said that if he gets a good idea he will work on it, but otherwise he seems not to be worried.

Of course, as he is now 66 and has been making films since the 1970s, it could be that he just feels entitled to take a break.
