How do I make Japanese miso soup?

Miso soup is the most common and popular soup in Japan. You can have it with steamed rice for your breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The key ingredient of miso soup is miso which is usually made from fermenting barley, soybeans, salt and fungus. There are three main types of miso you can choose from - red miso, white miso and mixed miso. Some people may prefer red miso, some may prefer white miso, but for the first time try, red miso paste can be a safe choice.

The other key ingredient of miso soup is the dashi which a soup stock made of dried kelp, dried baby sardines, thin shavings of dried and smoked bonito, dried shiitake. Fortunately, you can buy pre-made dashi in the supermarket now.

The other ingredients for the miso soup include: tofu, onion, spring onion, carrots. Sometimes, you can include pork or sijimi (Cyrenidae).

Once you get all the ingredients, your job is almost done as its very simple to make a miso soup, well a simple one.

  • put the dash in a pot of water with tofu and other vegetables
  • when its boiled, turn off the fire, dissolve miso into the pot
