The estimated budget for Prometheus was $120-130 million, and the final cost was around $125 million. So it didn't run over budget, but of course such a big budget film would need to do very well at the box office to cover its costs anyway. The marketing campaign was also very expensive, and to make an actual profit the film would probably need to take at least $400 million. As of 26 July 2012 it has taken $300 million and it is set to make more - there is also money from merchandising to take into account. The film has divided critics and audiences, with a lot of fans feeling disappointed by this latest offering from the cult director Ridley Scott, but it isn't a flop in the sense that it is still attracting audiences, even if not as large as hoped.

Prometheus is in 3D - you can read a detailed article about Scott's use of 3D here.
