This was a Swedish film, the first of three based on the trilogy by the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson. The original book title was 'Men Who Hate Women' and the story is centred on abuse and violence towards girls and women. Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the tattoo, survives rape and other abuses and determines to take her revenge; she also helps Michael Blomkvist, a journalist, uncover similar crimes committed against other women. The next two films in the series are 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' and 'The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest'.
The Swedish film came out in 2009 and was a huge success, especially for its star, Noomi Rapace. In late 2011 an American version was released, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. Reviews have been good so far, although people who have seen both versions tend overwhelmingly to prefer the Swedish original. If this film is a box office success there will probably be further American versions of the other two films.
