A moped often referred to as a scooter is a step through frame motorcycle, which has the following features:

  • The Maximum design speed does not exceed 50km/h approximately 31mph.
  • The engine capacity is not greater than 50cc.
  • If the moped was manufactured before 1st September 1977 then it can be moved by pedals. In newer manufactured models then pedals are no longer fitted.

A scooter is very similar to a moped however the engine capacity can range from 50cc to 250cc whereas by definition a moped engine cannot exceed 50cc.
