I know this isn't helpful, but it really does depend on who's going to the party! If it's for you and your friends, then it's whatever you yourself most enjoy: One of the good things about a party with friends of your own age is getting to know different musical tastes, so don't worry too much about whether your friends will like the same styles as you do. And if you're really not into music, your best bet is to ask advice from a friend who is.

If it's more of a mixed group, like a big family party or one with many different ages, then variety is the key - and if in doubt, go a bit further back in time. People tend to like what they've heard many times before, even if it wasn't their taste to start with - there is research to prove this - so include some old favourites (not too old though - think about the ages of your guests, work out what year people would have been in their teens in. Then look up 'Greatest hits 1990s, or whatever, and get ideas from that).
