This is a very good year to see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, as solar activity is at its greatest this year and in 2013. In fact, the lights have already been glimpsed in places that don't normally see them, such as parts of the UK.

In Europe, Iceland is a very big destination, as are Norway and Sweden. It's possible to arrange a Northern Lights Tour to any or all of these countries, when the best times and destinations are offered to you in a package. If you want to organize your tour independently, the best months are February, March and October, and when you have decided on the month you want to go you should also check the phases of the moon (the lights are at their clearest at the time of the new moon, as the sky is at its darkest then).

You can also take a similar tour from US and Canadian destinations - Alaska is one of the most famous.
