After a couple of months out of the game for a serious liver transplant, few people believed Eric Abidal would ever be able to play football again. Doctors were optimistic about his health yet pessimistic about Abidal's chances of playing football again. Doctors argued that playing football might endanger the liver's recovery process: in the early stages of transplants, organs are still weak and any blow on the part of the body transplanted can be more serious than it would usually be.

However, surgeon Juan Carlos Garcia Valdecasas, the one who carried out Abidal's transplant, claimed yesterday (30/5/2012) that Abidal might be able to compete at a professional level depending on the evolution of the transplant. According to the doctor, the liver regenerates in three months and patients can lead a normal life within three and six months onwards after the transplant.
