What to see in Amsterdam?

People tend to think about the famous (or infamous) red light district when they think of Amsterdam, and in fact most tourists do at least have a stroll through it. But there is so much more to see; it's a great city.

Amsterdam is home to the Anne Frank Museum and the Van Gogh Museum, which are both unmissable though of course in totally different ways. The top cultural attraction, though, is probably the Rijksmuseum (the national heritage museum). You also shouldn't neglect the Neuwe Kirk (new church) which is fascinating in itself and often has an exhibition or musical event going on as well. As for things to do, a boat trip along the canal is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ways to see the city.

Amsterdam has excellent public transport and if you get a card you can explore as much as you like. Or some choose to hire a bike - like all Dutch cities, it's very well set up for cyclists. You may also like just to sit in a cafe by the canal (there are plenty of ordinary cafes as well as the 'special' ones) and feel the atmosphere.
