A traditional Japanese breakfast consists of the following: steamed rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickled vegetables (radish, plum, cucumber, etc), toasted seaweeds.

Most Japanese believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so the Japanese housewives usually get up early and prepare the healthy breakfast for the whole family. However, western style breakfast such as toast and cereal is getting more common for the young generation Japanese, especially for those who are young and live on their own.

Miso soup is probably the most common soup in Japan, and usually eaten along a bowl of hot steamed rice. You can find how to make miso soup here.
