Traveling to another country is both exciting and daunting at the same time. It's really not so much about the country you are traveling to than it's about you. Some of the very important considerations you must keep in mind when traveling to Japan are:

1. Why do you want to move? It seems to be a simple question but nothing happens until you get this down on paper clearly.

2. How do you propose to live in Japan?

  • If you choose to work for a company, it's best to first find a job before you leave. Land in Japan on a tourist visa and look for a job. If you secure a job, leave the country and have your new employer arrange for a work permit.
  • If you wish to start a business, look for visa options for entrepreneurs in Japan. Investments usually call for commitment and large sums of money. Your company should have already been registered as a company, employed at least 2 full-time employees, and invested JPY 5 million or above before applying for this visa.

3. Facilities, cost of living, Language etc

If you are moving alone or with your family, you should consider what's available in Japan for you. This is a non-issue since Japan is a modern country with all amenities available. Another critical consideration is cost of living since Japan is incredibly expensive. You should be able to figure out if the level of expenses are something you are comfortable with.

Then comes the language: while metros like Tokyo would have people talking in English, you'll find that you'll need a working knowledge of Japanese Language. There are no two ways about it.

4. Culture and Lifestyle

Some countries have a laid-back, slow-paced lifestyle while other countries are chaotic. The Japanese (especially in large cities like Tokyo) work incredibly hard, for instance. If you were moving to Japan because you wanted peace and a much more simpler lifestyle, you aren't going to get that in Tokyo. Another important, almost overlooked, thing to consider is the culture of the people and see if you can relate to it. Usually, traveling to Japan for a few months first is a good idea before you decide.
