The Carry On Films were a series of British comedy films made between 1958 and 1992. There are 31 films in total. The Carry On Films were aimed at an adult audience, but the humour was usually easily understood by older children. The typical plot involved lots of mildly risque jokes, puns etc, and a good number of scantily clad young women. There was some very gentle satire on British life, history and institutions, and the atmosphere was mellow and good-humoured.
The first film, Carry On Sergeant, featured Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jaques, Charles Hawtrey and Terry Scott. These four were to become regular stars in the series, especially Williams. Later there would be more famous names added, such as Barbara Windsor, Joan Sims and Sid James.

In the 1950s and 60s the films were hugely popular, and as they were also cheap to make (the many 'exotic' locations were usually just a muddy field or London studio) they were very profitable. By the 70s they were starting to look a bit tired,; the last film, Carry On Columbus, used different actors including Julian Clary, but it wasn't a success.
