What happened to the Costa Concordia?

This terrible accident is still being investigated and it will be some time before we know all the facts. Right now it's known that six people have died, and there are still 16 missing. The captain is under arrest, and the latest information suggests that his actions may have caused or partly caused the accident.

There are reports that he may have been in the habit of coming too close to the shore (and not only this captain either; in some areas sailing close to the shore is quite a popular thing to do, so the passengers can get a good view.) In this case, they are investigating whether he came way too close, maybe even to salute a friend of his in the harbour.

The ship struck a huge rock; the question now is whether the captain's actions were to blame or whether, as his lawyer claims, he actually prevented the rock from doing even worse damage.

The story keeps developing, so there will be more to say on this one. But the latest news indicates that the captain was mainly to blame.
