According to Tripadvisor it is Liverpool, as of last November. Liverpool is praised for its welcoming night clubs with a good mix of music, lively pubs, top entertainment such as stand-up comedians and a number of other attractions. Plus of course, it's the home of the Beatles and huge numbers of people go there just to see the Cavern, or the band's favourite haunts such as the Grapes pub.

Overall, recent figures put the north of England and Scotland in top positions for nightlife. Manchester was next after Liverpool, and Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow were among the other top ten choices. The only southern cities to figure were London, in third place, and Brighton.

There's no doubt that there is a big north-south divide when it comes to nightlife. Apart from big cities like London, 'going out' in the south is often much more about going out for a meal or to see a show (or, increasingly, to get drunk) while many northern cities have a lot more lively entertainment on offer and it's much more the norm to go out several nights a week.
