The first event in the 2012 games will be football. In fact this will start before the official opening ceremony. The first women's football matches will take place on 25 July, with 8 teams scheduled to play. The first event of all will be the match between Great Britain and New Zealand.

These matches will be followed by the first men's matches on the 26th, beginning with Honduras against Morocco. You can find a full schedule for the Olympics here - follow the links for fuller information about any sporting events.

The actual opening ceremony is not until 27 July. The first event after the ceremony is archery, with both men's and women's starting on that day.

There are several events scheduled to finish on the day of the closing ceremony, which is August 12, including hanball, pentathlon and boxing.
