The Movember movement started in Adelaide, Australia in 1999. A group of men in a pub one evening had the idea of growing moustaches to support charitable causes. The story appeared on the local TV 'Seven Nightly News' programme and the group soon acquired 80 members. Once the idea became public it quickly travelled around the world.
In the past people had often done similar things for charity, like shaving their heads or growing a beard, but this idea of large numbers of men all doing the same thing at the same time was a big hit. The aim of the charity is to raise awareness of men's health, especially prostate cancer, as this illness and other specifically male health problems are often diagnosed too late due to lack of knowledge.
As well as growing moustaches, 'Mo Bros' do everything possible to bring these issues to people's attention and to raise money to help. So far Movember has raised almost £40 million.
