Mohammed Ali has won the World Heavyweight boxing championship 3 times, in 1964, 1974 and 1978. However this is only a small part of his total boxing wins;; out of a total of 61 fights he won 56, meaning he only ever lost 5 fights in total - none of his matches ever ended in a draw, and in more than half of his victories his opponent was knocked out.
Ali was born Cassius Clay in 1942. He started fighting at a very early age, becoming a professional boxer in 1960 at the age of 18. He won his first match and over the next three years had an unbroken string of victories over such famous names as Jim Robinson and Henry Cooper. His 1963 fight with Sonny Liston made him world famous, and he became known as much for his distinctive style and outspoken opinions as for his legendary boxing skills. He retired in 1981 after increasing health problems caused largely by boxing.
