Tumors can be divided into two main types: benign tumors and malignant tumors.

A benign tumor does not keep growing or invade other tissues. For example, a lipoma is a benign tumor.

On the other hand, a malignant tumor is a tumor that composes of abnormal cells. These cells are keeping growing even when they are not needed. They do not mature or function properly as normal cells do. For example, cancerous white blood cells are malignant tumors. Cancerous cells can invade other tissues or organs. For example, a tumor that starts in the lung can travel to the liver.
