The main cause for a hangover in its simplest explanation is excessive alcohol consumption.

The nastier side effects of a hangover such as headaches and nausea are the result of dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic meaning that it increases the loss of water from the body, usually through increased urination.

As the loss of water from the body increases the liver and other essential bodily functions which rely on water to help rid the toxins are significantly impaired, if enough water is lost the blood volume will drop resulting in reduced oxygen low to the brain, a result of the reduced blood and oxygen flow is that the blood vessels will expand causing the headache to worsen.
