Cantabria is an autonomous region of northern Spain. Its capital city is Santander. The part of the country in which Cantabria is situated is known as Green Spain because it has a relatively mild climate, with more rain than is found in many parts of Spain and lush vegetation. One reason that many tourists like to visit this area is for the countryside, especially the woodlands and mountains and the seven National Parks. The coast is also beautiful and popular for swimming and water sports.
For more cultural attractions, Cantabria has a long and rich history going back beyond Roman times, and its cities and architecture reflect this. The principal city, Santander, is a beautiful place with a coastal setting near the mountains. It is also famous because it is on the famous Pilgrim's Way and is close to the World Heritage Altamira Caves.
