As incredible as it may sound, the athlete or sportsman who will light the olympic torch in the London 2012 opening ceremony is still a mystery, and we may not know it until the very last minute. But why?

A month ago there was speculation that David Beckham would be the star to light the fire of the Olympics but Beckham's not been selected to play with the English football Olympic team and so he declared that he would not be the person to bear such an honour, that an Olympic sportsman should. Names like famous rower Steve Redgrave or decathlon sportsman Daley Thompson have been ringing loud in speculation but the identity of the fire lighter will not be disclosed until the very last minute!
