Most pregnant women's waters break spontaneously prior to labor. Amniotic fluid surrounding your baby will leak out when your waters break.

Sometimes, the amniotic fluid can be confused with vaginal discharges or urine. If you are in any doubt, do not hesitate to take notes of the color of the fluid and the time the leak occurred, and call your midwife or health provider immediately.

Your doctor can perform a sterile speculum exam to decide if the fluid is amniotic fluid or not. If it is, the your waters have broken, you will be admitted to the hospital and usually the labor should occur within 24 hours after the waters broke.
