Since 20 August 2012 the government has been the Federal Government of Somalia. Before that, there was a brief caretaker government, following a long period of near anarchy when government forces had little actual power.
Since August, the country has been known as the Federal Republic of Somalia and has had an official constitution, which the government is pledged to uphold. The President is Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who was elected by Somali legislators. Although an attack was made on the new President soon after he took office, it is hoped that under his rule Somalia will become more stable and prosperous. The country has started a number of building programs and other public works, and has attraced investment from other countries like Turkey. There are also signs that the Islamist fighters who have tried to destabilise different governments may be losing their grip, though clearly it's too early to say what will happen.
