Why giving up smoking makes you gain weight?

One of the most frequent excuses that smokers give to carry on with their habit is 'I don't want to quit smoking because I will become fat'.

A recent study from the Yale University of Medicine unfolds the reason why nicotine makes smokers feel less hungry and consequently keep thinner while they smoke.
The psychiatrist Marina Picciotto, team leader of the investigation, has discovered by testing mice that the nicotine has an effect in receptors of the brain's hypothalamus, responsible for the appetite regulation. This effect will send a "I'm already full' message to your brain.

So quitting smoking does not make you gain weight, but it is the suppression of nicotine in your organism what will make you feel as hungry as you should and put some weight (usually a person gains an estimated of 5 pounds of weight after quitting).

This study will be very helpful for the development of new drugs that target these receptors of the brain. In the meantime the habit of smoking is so harmful for health that habitual smokers should not postpone stopping their habit with the help of today's methods and not wait for a new solution that could help them stay slim.
