Person with diabetes can monitor blood glucose level either at home or at pathology. It's important for diabetic people to check their blood sugar level for avoiding many health complications. They can simply use FreeStyle Optium Blood Glucose test strips with FreeStyle Optium meter available in the market to test glucose level at home. You may have to check blood sugar level before meals or exercise, before bedtime etc. to know the complications. Everyone is different, so it's important to seek opinion of doctor regarding the checking time of blood sugar level.

Self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is recommended for everyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. There are different types of meter available - you can find information about the different products and their pros and cons here.

However, the best person to advise you on the best SMBG methods is your doctor. You will normally need to have your glucose levels checked by a doctor or other health professional every 2 to 6 months, so the next time you go for a check you can ask about the best way to check your own levels at home. The simplest method is just a blood test using a sample from a pricked finger, but there are other ways too. Some people need to do this at different times of day as blood sugar levels can vary throughout the day, but again you can get advice on this.

Even if you do self monitor at home, you will still need your regular professional check-up as well.
