We all know fresh fruits and vegetables are good for our health. Whenever possible, we try to follow doctors' recommendation - 5 a day. It is also important to know when to eat and what to eat so we can maximise the benefits of fruits.

It is good to have fruits first thing in the morning, but not acid fruits such as oranges, pineapples, lemons, sour peaches, sour grapes and etc. Eating acid fruits in an empty stomach can stimulate it to secrete hydrochloric acid in gastric juice which will upset stomach. Instead, its good to have low acid fruits or sweet fruits. For example, blueberries, strawberries, fresh figs, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, mangos, sweet plums, prunes, pears, sweet grapes.

Another important thing to remember is never having fruits immediately after a meal. It is ideal to having a fruit before a meal. If you have a habit to have fruits after meals, wait at least two hours. Fruits contain simple sugar which do not require digestion, so if you eat fruits immediately after a meal, it will stay in your stomach for too long and ferment.

The mixing of fruits is also not good, especially the combination of melon and other fruits. Try to eat one type a time, and since it can digested very quickly, you can have another type of fruits 10-15 minutes later.
