The liver is very good at cleansing itself and dealing with toxins, as that is its function. However, it's very possible to damage the liver through an unhealthy lifestyle, and there are a lot of things you can do to avoid this.

One of the biggest causes of liver disease in modern Western countries is too much alcohol. The liver can deal with moderate amounts of alcohol, but not too much. If you try to stay within the recommended limits, it should be fine. Another major problem is overeating, especially fatty foods which the liver can struggle to cope with. The standard advice to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day will help a lot here, and also it helps to remember that a healthy plate of food will contain plenty of veg, a good portion of protein and some starch (potatoes etc) but only a very small amount of fat.
