Where can I buy an authentic 'kilt'?

The original Scottish kilt was a much bigger garment - a 'plaid' or cloak-like garment that could be worn over the left shoulder and belted at the waist. These were often made in special patterns denoting membership of a particular clan. Later, around the 17th century, it developed into the philebeg or small kilt, which we see today. The word itself is of Norse origin, as the kilt was probably brought to Scotland from Scandinavia. The word means to tuck something up.

So to wear a really authentic Scottish kilt you would, strictly speaking, have to be Scottish and to belong to a recognised clan. However, you can buy traditionally made kilts, created in Scotland. Almost any company that sells kilts will claim that theirs are the 'real thing' though, so be careful.

One company that does pride itself on its Scottish heritage is the Heritage of Scotland company. You can have a look at some of their goods here. Otherwise it may be a good idea to wait until you can visit Scotland itself.
