Why is diabetes dangerous?

The dangers of diabetes are not so much directly from the illness itself, as for the effects it can have on the body. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious damage. A lot of the problems stem from hypertension or high blood pressure, which in turn can affect the other organs. Damage to the heart is especially common, leading to heart attacks and strokes. The disease can also cause kidney problems and in some cases actual kidney (renal) failure. Perhaps less dangerous, but still very serious, are vision problems, from blurred vision to complete blindness, and pain or numbness in the limbs. Hearing loss and skin diseases can also result from diabetes.

The good news is that most of the really dangerous complications can be made far less likely with good health care and the right diet and lifestyle. Early diagnosis is important, so if you have any concerns you should see a doctor as soon as possible. You can find some general information here.
