Safety during pregnancy is a serious issue that worries future moms and dads. There are some cheeses that can be eaten and others that need to be avoided because some types of cheese are more likely to grow bacteria such as listeria. This bacteria cna be harmful for the fetus. This occurs because these cheeses are made with unpasteurised milk, which means that milk has not been heated to kill bacteria.

Among the non-acceptable cheeses for pregnant women are panella, asadero, brie, camembert and chevre and generally other soft and mould-ripened cheeses like danish-blue and stilton, bergader, blue d'Auvergne, gorgonzola, roncal, roquefort and tomme.

However, there are a variety of cheeses that can be eaten without any worry for moms. These recommendable hard chesese are cheddar, cheshire, gloucester, derby, edam, emmental, feta, mozarella, parmesan, gouda, gruyere, halloumi, havarti, provolone and red leicester. Also, all sorts of soft cheeses and cheese to spread like mascarpone and philadelphia and youghurt and creme fraiche are safe to eat.
