While fridges are one of the best inventions in the Twentieth Century, they are not always the best place to store foods. There are some foods for which refrigeration does more harm than good.

As you may already know, rule number one is never put hot food in fridges. This is because of the risk of food poisoning. Bacteria start to multiply at temperature of 80C, and by putting hot food in fridges, it will raise the temperature of fridges to the ideal condition for the the growth of food poisoning organisms. Always get the food cool first before putting inside the fridge.

  • Do not put fruits that you want to ripen in the fridge, such as avocado.
  • Do not put bananas in the fridge as they tend to go black.
  • Do not put mushrooms, potatoes and tomatoes in the fridge, instead, put them in a cool and dark place.
  • Do not put olive oil in the fridge as they will go thick and cloudy
  • Do not put bread in the fridge as it goes stale more quickly than being stored in a bread bin. If you want to keep bread longer, freeze it.
