How do I clean grill pans?

Most of us enjoy grilled food, but very few of us like to clean grill pans as they seem take ages to get clean. Ideally, the grill pan should be cleaned after every use. If you don't clean it regularly, you will end up with a filthy grill pan. In that case, you will have to buy a new one or use the following special method to get rid those tough stains.

Handle ammonia with extra care as it is not environmentally friendly and releases toxic gases. Wear gloves and safety glasses.

  • Put a couple of tablespoons of ammonia in a grill pan, and put the whole thing including the rack in a plastic bin bag (double or triple the bag in case it leaks)
  • Fasten the bag with string and leave the bag outside overnight.
  • Take the pan out of the bag and rinse it throughly with cold water. Ideally, do it in your garden with a hose rather than inside your kitchen.
  • Most of the dirts will come off, and then wash it as usual.
