THe easiest and most beneficial exercise for a beginner to yoga is to learn the sun saluation, or salute to the sun as it can be called. There are several variations of this, but it has ten to twelve steps and involves stretching every part of the body. Within the sun salutation are included several traditional yoga poses such as the prayer pose, the mountain pose and the dog stretch (both upward and downward facing).
If you do the whole sun salutation slowly and thoroughly (rushing makes it less effective) and repeat it two or three times (five is ideal, but you can build up to that) it makes an excellent start to the day as well as a good introduction to yoga.
