The Veronica Mars series was created by Rob Thomas. Rob Thomas was first known as a novelist - he is especially well known for his 1996 novel Rats Saw God - and was also a teacher for several years.
He started screenwriting in the 1990s. His first credited script was for a cartoon film in 1996, and then later in the decade he wrote a script that was used for the well known film Fortune Cookie. After this he was offered regular work writing for the long running TV series Dawson's Creek, and several other TV shows.
In 2004 he created Veronica Mars. This began as a novel written for Thomas' typical teen/young adult audience. For the screenplay, he changed the main character from a boy to a girl to make it more unusual. It was praised by critics but unlike much of his earlier work, it took a long time to become successful with the public. However, Veronica Mars is now a success and has also won several awards.
